In the heart of Westlake, Cape Town, lies a community-driven initiative aimed at bolstering academic success among high school students. Through a dynamic collaboration between Westlake United Church Trust (WUCT) and Baobab Learning, free academic assistance is offered to students in grades 10-12, fostering a pathway to brighter futures.
Partnership With Purpose
The mission is clear: to bridge educational gaps and empower the youth of Westlake. WUCT, a longstanding pillar of support in the community, has been instrumental in providing essential services ranging from healthcare to education since its inception in 2001. Recognising the pressing need for academic support, WUCT teamed up with Baobab Learning in August 2023.
Baobab Learning, led by directors Rochelle Duvenage and Natalie Winter, brings expertise and passion to the partnership. With sponsorship from Safe Working Practice (SWP) Cape Town, an occupational health and safety company committed to community education, Baobab Learning delivers tailored tutoring sessions in seven critical subjects: Mathematics, Maths Literacy, Physics, Accounting, History, English, and Life Science.
An Initiative for Empowering Education
At the heart of this initiative lies a commitment to personalised support. Rochelle and Natalie provide focused assistance to students, addressing homework challenges, honing study skills, and offering targeted guidance in problematic areas of study. Importantly, the program places significant emphasis on exam preparation, ensuring students are equipped to excel in their assessments, particularly those facing the crucial matriculation exams.

By providing invaluable resources and mentorship, the project aims to equip students with the tools necessary to succeed academically and beyond. With aspirations to instill confidence and resilience in students who may face systemic barriers to success, Baobab Learning and its sponsors, and WUCT envision a community transformed by the power of education.
